I’m Geordan Murphy, I love being part of great teams.
I was a player, captain and Director of Rugby with Leicester Tigers over a 23-year period. Leicester’s ethos of always putting the needs of team ahead of the individual has left a lasting impression on me and is a message I take into my role as a leadership and team coach with Cleartrack.
Through Leicester’s collective effort built on selflessness and a willingness to work harder than anyone else, I was rewarded by becoming the most decorated Premiership rugby player in history, winning 8 Premierships and 3 domestic cup competitions, alongside back-to-back European Cups in 2001 and 2002. This was made far more special in that I was able to share this success with teammates I was deeply connected to and could trust completely.
The strength of Leicester’s high-performance culture propelled me to win a 6 nations grand slam with Ireland in 2009, 72 caps and the chance to play at 2 World Cups. Being part of a great Irish team led to a call up to the British and Irish Lions tour of New Zealand in 2005. My experience as a Lion, provided valuable insight in facing the challenge of forming a high performing team from differing backgrounds and perspectives within a short period of time.
Perhaps more crucially have been the lessons learned from failure. I have lost in 7 major finals and overcome many more physical and mental challenges. Most recently, running an organisation of over 100 people during the current global pandemic forced me to adapt, reflect and challenge my own thoughts and behaviours. I am passionate about using my experience to help others succeed in their chosen field and share my deep understanding of what it takes to create and maintain a high-performance environment built on integrity.
